A Memorial Tree is a fitting commemoration and a lasting tribute to the life of your loved one. The planting of a tree represents renewal and new life and adds tranquility to its surroundings. Moreover, you can derive comfort from the knowledge that the tree planted to commemorate the life of your loved one will bring beauty to the landscape, pleasure to visitors and help preserve the environment for years to come.

The Memorial Tree Program

The Memorial Tree Program at Fernhill Cemetery is one of several ways of commemorating a life while adding to the Cemetery's community of stately and elegant trees. In keeping with the 19th century tradition of rural cemetery design, sites have been selected throughout the property which best suit the growth and development of memorial trees as well as maintaining the pastoral appearance of our landscape. There are many types of trees available for commemorations, and plantings take place in spring and fall.

How the Program works:

Those wishing to participate provide a minimum $500.00 contribution (for which a charitable tax receipt is issued), and a tree is planted in memory of their loved one(s). Each Memorial Tree package includes a tree (and replacement of the tree in the first 5 years, if required), tree planting & maintenance by trained staff, and a choice of commemoration to recognize the memorial. The commemoration can be in the form of an inscribed marker at the tree site, or an inscription added to a list on a large monument recognizing the tree program. The monument has been placed at the entrance of the grounds.

Memorial Tree Options

Option 1: Existing Tree
A quantity of trees will be planted by the Cemetery for the program. One of these trees could be selected as a memorial.

Option 2: New Tree
A new tree may be planted to commemorate your loved one in one of the many locations available throughout the cemetery. Our staff would be pleased to assist with tree selection and planting location.
